Working with Orange Farm residents to growing their opportunities
Discovery, in partnership with the City of Johannesburg, has embarked on an employee volunteer flagship programme. The programme aims to create and promote thriving communities, one at a time. It will be implemented through strategic and creative partnerships between Discovery, the City of Johannesburg and other key stakeholders from the public and private sector and civil society. Through a needs-based approach, employees from Discovery and the City of Johannesburg will volunteer their time, knowledge and skills working alongside residents of Orange Farm. , These employees will become ‘active citizens for change’ igniting an active citizenry social movement, ensuring the intervention is meaningful and has an impact.
The programme has started in Region G of Orange Farm, in the City of Johannesburg. This community is one of South Africa’s largest informal settlements located 45km from central Johannesburg. For jobs and economic opportunities, Orange Farm residents dependent on Johannesburg’s inner city. This lack of access results in the community spatially and economically marginalised, leading to high levels of poverty. Unemployment rate stands at an estimated 60% with the community receiving 9 out of 10 on the City’s deprivation rank (10 being the most deprived).
